Umtanum Creek Canyon Hike
Report and photos by Clay Graham / Selah Sweets – Selah Community & Tourism.

On Sunday March 20th, 2016 Selah Cub Scout Pack 276 met up at Selah Sweets. Around 1:30 PM they convoyed north up the Yakima River Canyon to the Umtanum Recreation Area to do a hike up Umtanum Creek Canyon.

It was a very kind of a cold day for the hike but the Scouts were very excited to go. We took a photo and headed across the foot bridge and under the railroad tracks.

Not far up the trail we found the creek had been high recently and caused a lot of damage. The first part of the trail had been washed away. We headed on to our turn around point at the big beaver dam.

We got to the area of the big beaver dam to find it has been washed away too. We stopped to look at some tree stumps the beavers recently cut on. We did not see any signs of any new dams.

We headed back to the parking area for a picnic. The Scouts and families cooked hotdogs over a campfire.

After the picnic, the Cub Scouts put the fire out, picked up the area and headed home.

This was a very fun time thanks to all who came.

2016 Slab ORV Area Clean Up
Report by Clay Graham and photos by Clay Graham / Selah Sweets – Selah Community & Tourism.

On Saturday March 19th, 2016 volunteers met up at the Slab ORV Area near Buena Washington around 10 AM for the annual Slab Clean-up hosted by the Dust Dodgers, Eastern Washington Adventures & Selah Cub Scout Pack 276.

The volunteers spread out over the area picking up trash along the way. For some of the bigger pills they called in rigs with trailers. Over all the areas was not too bad.

We would like to thank all the people that came out to help. Thank you to the Dust Dodgers for taking care of the dump fee.

Photos: Selah Cub Scout Pack 276 Winter Camp at Camp Fife

Selah Cub Scout Pack 276
Winter Camp at Camp Fife
Report and photos by Clay Graham / Selah Community & Tourism

On Saturday January 16th, 2016 Selah Cub Scout Pack 276 met up at Selah Community & Tourism and then convoyed to Camp Fife.

Camp Fife is a Boy Scout camp and is located in the Cascades off of Chinook Pass near Bumping Lake in Goose Prairie, Washington.

The last part of the trip up was interesting. As soon as we turned off of SR-410 onto Bumping Lake road, the road became narrow and covered with snow. We met a grader trying to make the road wider. The snow banks on the sides of the road were very deep. Turning into Camp Fife was kind of scary with only a one lane path with tall snow banks on both sides. We did not see a place to park at the Care Takers place due to other vehicles in the entries. We kept going hoping we could find a parking area near the lodges. We past the first lodge and thought maybe you could get a few vehicles up the lane, but we knew Troop 275 was staying there. We pushed on toward the next lodge but the path got too narrow for the Yukon XL. We backed out and contacted Mark the Care Taker to find us a place to park.

Mark had some people move their vehicles and then used the tractor to clear some parking spaces. As he was doing that, a few took the long hike to the Curtis Gilbert Lodge to start the fife and light the propane lanterns.

Once everyone was parked, we loaded up a canoe with our camping gear and Mark pulled it up to the Curtis Gilbert Lodge with the tractor. It took two trips to get everything to the lodge.

Selah Boy Scout Troop 275 showed up as we were packing stuff in. Mark had them park in another parking lot that was earlier blocked by a truck and snowmobile trailer.

Later that night another Cub Scout family came up. As they were packing in their stuff, one of the Boy Scout parents got stuck. He asked the Cub Scout Dad to gave him a pull and then they both were stuck. They left both vehicles then until the morning.

Up at the lodges, the Scout were having fun.

The Cub Scout lodge (Curtis Gilbert) was very warm. The Scouts played cards and board games until bed time.

The next day was a lot of fun for both Scout groups. They did a lot sledding, some tried cross country skiing, some played in some igloos that were there, and some made snow caves. It was a long day of snow fun.

The last day it was very nice out. The Scouts did some sledding after breakfast as the parents packed stuff back to the vehicles.

Over all this was a very fun Scout Camp Out.

Veterans Day Parade in Yakima
Report & photos by Clay Graham / Selah Community & Tourism – SelahAdventures.com

On Wednesday November 11th 2015, there was a Veterans Day Parade downtown Yakima sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 379.

The Veterans Day parade started at 10:45 AM on Yakima Avenue at the Sixth Street intersection and headed west to 6th Avenue. Then it turn south and ended about a block east of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 379 building.

I was attending the Veterans Day Parade as Cubmaster of Selah Cub Scout Pack 267 and marching with other Scouts from the Grand Columbia Council Skookum District.

I did not get many non-scout related photos but I a did get a few of our Selah Community Days Association.

Thank you to all who have served!

Beverly Dunes Clean Up
Report and photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

On the morning of Saturday November 7th, 2015, Eastern Washington Adventures Members and Selah Cub Scout Pack 276 met up at Beverly Dunes for the annual clean up. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) staff showed up early to greet the volunteers for the Beverly Dunes Clean Up as they signed in.

Around 10 AM, volunteers headed out to cleaned campfire pits, picked up trash within the campgrounds and picked up trash in the sand dune ORV riding area. Around 3 PM all the volunteers came back in and got a photo at the dumpster with the trash they picked up. Some already went into the dumpster earlier that day.

This event was a fun, thanks to all who came out to help.

Selah Cub Scout Pack 276
Camp Fife Summer Camp-out
Report and photos by Clay Graham / Selah Adventures – Selah Community & Tourism.

On Saturday morning, August 15 2015, Selah Cub Scout Pack 276 convoyed from Selah to Camp Fife to set up camp at Curtis Gilbert Boy Scout Lodge. Camp Fife is a Boy Scout camp and is located in the Cascades off of Chinook Pass near Bumping Lake in Goose Prairie, Washington.

Once camp was set up, the Cub Scouts carpooled with parents to Raven Roost. Raven Roost is over 6000 feet above sea level and has a great view of Mount Rainier. On this day the weather was cold and the mount view was lost in the clouds. We did not stay long. We headed back down the mountain to were it was warm.

It was still early enough to do another “Go see it” so we headed up the Little Naches River to the fish ladder. We stayed awhile and the Scouts had fun exploring the area.

Next it was time to head back to Camp Fife to cook dinner. The leader cooked dinner since the Scouts could not cook their own food in the campfire due to a burn band.

Sunday morning some of the Cub Scouts got up early helped set up the screen pop up so the bees would not attack the food being cooked. Once all Scouts were up, they raised the flag and did the Pledge of Allegiance. A short time later there was a pancake breakfast with bacon, hash browns, and eggs made by the Scout Leaders and parents.

After breakfast everyone helped to clean the lodge and surrounding area. Once everything was cleaned and the gear was packed up in the vehicles, the Scouts and families did a hike through Camp Fife to check everything out. The Cub Scouts got to see all the camp has to offer them as Boy Scouts.

Once back at the Curtis Gilbert Lodge we loaded up in the vehicles and convoyed to Boulder Cave. Once there we had lunch and then headed on a hike up the Boulder Cave Trail.

We have hiked this trail for many years and always had a great time. On this day we were very disappointed on what we saw. People had made many other trails off the normal path. There was a lot of people off the trail in many places. We watched other people throw their trash down as the walked.

One group was drinking beer on the Boulder Cave Trail and had left a beer bottle behind. As we came up to a group of people blocking the trail, they were swearing and drinking the brand of beer left behind. We watch one guy open a beer and throw the cap on the ground. We let them know they forgot a beer bottle and they told us it wasn’t theirs. They had a real bad attitude so we walked around them and kept going.

The Cub Scouts saw a lot of things people were doing against what the Boy Scouts are taught. This maybe our last Scout hike at Boulder Cave if the Forest Service does start enforcing the leave no trace rules.

Over all this was a very fun Cub Scout Camp Out.

We are planning our next camping trip at Camp Fife to be this coming winter.

Selah Cub Scout Pack 276
Ahtanum State Forest Camp-out
Report and photos by Clay Graham / Selah Adventures – Selah Community & Tourism.

On Thursday evening August 6th 2015, Selah Cub Scout Pack 276 set up camp at Ahtanum Meadows in the Ahtanum State Forest west of Yakima, Washington for a weekend Scout Camp-out and DNR volunteer opportunity.

The Scouts started off walking the Ahtanum Campground picking up trash in the camp sites and the North Fork Ahtanum Creek. Once the area was cleaned up, the Scouts built their tents. One tent was missing a pole, so the Scouts had to come up with an idea to make the tent stand up. They used sticks with bungees for the missing pole and one stick out front the hold up the rain cover.

After camp was set up and the Scouts had dinner, they set around the campfire playing games. There was a burn ban so the Scouts used a propane campfire which were allowed. Just after dark, the Scouts watched the International Space Station fly overhead. Then it was off to bed.

Friday the Cub Scouts started out playing in the North Fork Ahtanum Creek as they searched for a long stick for a flag pole. Once they got the flag up higher on the pole they found, they went for a swim in the creek. Later in the day the Scouts went for a hike around Ahtanum Meadows and then went swimming again.

Later that night after dinner the Scouts had smores and sang songs around the propane campfire. Then it was off to bed for the second night.

Saturday morning the Scouts started off with raising the flag and the Pledge of Allegiance. Breakfast was next and then the trip up to hike Fall Creek. This was a long drive up Nasty Creek Road to get to the trail. Along the way the Scouts picked up trash. The Scouts hiked around Fall Creek for a few hours and then headed back to camp for lunch.

After lunch the Scouts went on a hike on the other side of creek from camp picking up trash along the way. They hiked to Ahtanum Campground and then took a hiking trail up Sedge Ridge to a place they could look down on their camp. The Scouts backtracked and then headed over to the ruins an old amphitheater. Once finding the ruins, the Scout picked up trash around the area and then hiked back to camp.

Back at camp the Cub Scouts cook their dinners on the camp stove. After dinner the Cub Scouts gathered around the propane campfire, made smores, sang songs, told camp stories, and then headed off to bed for the third night.

Sunday morning the Cub Scouts started off with raising the flag and the Pledge of Allegiance. Next there was a pancake breakfast with bacon, sausage, and eggs made by the Scout Leaders and parents.

After breakfast most broke down there camps. A few took took another swim in the creek.

It was a very fun Cub Scout Camp Out.

There is another family camp-out and hiking trip next weekend off Chinook Pass.

Selah Cub Scout Pack 276
Umtanum Creek Canyon Hike
Report and photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures / Selah Adventures – Selah Community & Tourism.

On Sunday March 29th, 2015 Selah Cub Scout Pack 276 headed north up the Yakima River Canyon and met up at Umtanum Recreation Area to do a hike up Umtanum Creek Canyon.

It was a very nice day for the hike. We took our time and made our way up to the beaver dams and back.

On the way we had to take a different path to cross the creek since the logs were gone where we had crossed in the past. This new to us trail had parts if a foundation from maybe a house. The concrete walk was dated Nov 1933. There were stairs going into the ground too.

After the hike we had a picnic. The Scouts and families cooked hotdogs over a campfire.

After the picnic, the Cub Scouts put the fire out and picked up the area.

This was a very fun thanks to all who came.

2015 Slab ORV Area Clean-up
Report by Amanda Graham and photos by Clay Graham / Eastern Washington Adventures

On Saturday March 21st, 2015 volunteers met up at the Slab ORV Area near Buena Washington around 10 AM for the Slab Clean-up hosted by the Dust Dodgers & Eastern Washington Adventures.

This year the Slab ORV Area did not have a lot of trash, although there was still a pile of trash here and there that needed to be hauled out. There was a lot of volunteers that came out to help. There were members from the Dust Dodgers, Eastern Washington Adventures, Region 4 PNW4WDA, and Selah Cub Scout Pack 276.

We would like to thank all the people that came out to help. Thank you to the Dust Dodgers for taking care of the dump fee.

Thank you for the support from the following: Dust Dodgers, Eastern Washington Adventures, Selah Cub Scout Pack 276, PNW4WDA Region 4, Built-it Offroad and Forest Watch Volunteer Program.
